The Cake Bride

The Cake Bride

This woman’s quirky cake idea first hit the press back in 2008, but it was just recently picked up again by AOL news. Article recycling aside, I’m glad I got to see it the second time around.

The “cute factor” of having a cake in one’s own likeness I can understand. Somewhere between the fantasy and reality of the situation, though, I would feel more than a little silly. No doubt people would construe this to say something unflattering of your ego. And, possibly worse, this life-size creation could feed a small country. I say this with confidence since I was just quoted on a wedding cake myself.

To her credit, the original plan was to personify both bride and groom in cake form, and the bakery just ran out of time. No wonder; that thing sure looks like work!

Orange Cinnamon Chicken Recipe

I was watching “Top Chef: Just Desserts” a few days ago and was kind of amazed by the combinations the contestants were coming up with. They were so in tune with how the flavors would interact with eachother; it was just amazing.

I’m not much of a cook myself, but I came across this recipe on allrecipes.com (submitted by a user named CafeAmericano) with a pretty cool but simple flavor combination and thought maybe I’d try it out tonight. Here’s to expanding my repertoire!

Ingredients (Serves 4)

  • 1 1/2 tablespoons butter
  • 4 skinless, boneless chicken breast halves
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • salt to taste
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup orange juice
  • 1/2 orange, sliced

Directions

  1. Preheat an oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
  2. Melt the butter in a skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the chicken on both sides in the hot butter until golden brown on both sides, about 10 minutes; place the chicken into a shallow baking dish. Stir the flour, cinnamon, and orange juice into the skillet. Bring to boil, and cook until thickened. Season with salt to taste, then pour over the chicken breasts in the baking dish. Cover the chicken breasts with orange slices.
  3. Bake the chicken breasts in the preheated oven until no longer pink in the center and the juices run clear, about 45 minutes. An instant-read thermometer inserted into the center should read at least 165 degrees F (74 degrees C).

Caffeinated Marshmallows

It’s true. These Stay Puft marshmallows are really caffeinated. At first, I wanted to say that this is a good idea. But having given it some thought, over 100mg of caffeine per marshmallow sounds a little dangerous! They’re so small and easy to ingest. And made of sugary goodness. There’s 24 in the box, so technically– according to my Wikipedia research– misuse of that one box could potentially KILL over 2 and a half people! Yeah, crazy, right?

So what I’m trying to say is just “eat responsibly.” Click the image to check it out yourself.

Chocomize Candy Bars

This company, Chocomize, is famous for selling customized chocolate candy bars through their online “creation station,” where they offer up every fruit, spice, candy, or decorative topping option under the sun. Granted, I could sprinkle a bit of this and that on a Hershey’s bar and have the same thing, but that’s even beside the point.

Thing is, their pre-made bars average around $7 each. The customization process begins at $3.85 and toppings go anywhere from .55 cents to $3.25 each. That’s a lot for a candy bar! Even a good one! So I guess what I’ve learned today is that clever gimmicks really can go the distance.
